This synopsis was review & updated by “The
Geneal Geologist”, April 2017 - Introduction
The origin of the family name of SANDERS is
a classical one from the Greek Alexander 'helper of men'. In the Middle Ages,
probably due to the French romance of Alexander, the name appeared in its
French form Alisandre. As early as 1248 in England from this was
formed the pet name Sandre, from which the modern surnames of SANDARS,
SANDERS, and SAUNDERS arise. As a consequence of dialect and spelling, all
references for all variant spellings need to be checked. Spelling was not
standardised until the mid C19th, but remains one of the more common English
surnames. The name Al Iksander (“son of Iksander”) is still used in the
Middle East. For 2002, the UK's National Statistics for
some variants of the surname are as follows:
A factor of 0.93 is usually applied to
estimate the number of living individuals (i.e. over 69,000), and a factor of
3.5 used to estimate how many have lived with that name since UK church
records began in the C16th (i.e. nearly 242,000).
- My Maternal SANDERS Family: C18th/C19th Coventry & Aston,
Birmingham Watchmakers -
A line of watchmakers in the Coventry area
which moved mid-C19th to Birmingham. Numerous descendants are believed to
still be in the Birmingham area, with known descendants also in Canada and
the United States. Overview
of Earliest Possible Generations (Coventry):
The
earliest noted of the family name in Coventry is the 1468 Mayor, William
SAUNDERS, establishing that the family name was in the city at least from the
C15th. A confirmed link to later generations is pending, however the earliest
generations could be as follows: Possible
head of tree is William SANDERS of Coventry (1666) = Catherine
by 1694. Their son William SANDERS (1694) = Elizabeth WISE (d/o
Richard WISE), my possible 8xGGPs, in 1714. William & Elizabeth's
children were: · William SANDERS (1716); · Edward SANDERS (1721); · Thomas SANDERS (1722); · John SANDERS (1724); · Elizabeth SANDERS (1726); William
SANDERS (1716)
= Katherine/Catherine (m. by 1735), my possible 7xGGPs, whose known
children include: · Nicholas SANDERS (1735); · John SANDERS

(1735-1806) = Ann
GUTTERIDGE (1734, d/o of William & Mary GUTTERIDGE) on 24 Feb
1759 (buried 16 Apr 1794 St Michael). They are my probable 6xGGPs if William,
below, is their son. Their known children are: · William SANDERS (1760, presumably
died young); · Ann SANDERS (c1762); · Joseph SANDERS (1762); · Sarah SANDERS (1764) = 1789 Thomas
SHORTLEY; · Mary SANDERS (1767); · William SANDERS (1769); · John SANDERS (1773). Earliest Proven Generations (Coventry):

Children: § Mary SANDERS (1847-70) = John INGRAM; § Sarah SANDERS (1848) - Last identified
aged 13 on the 1861 census; o
Emma SANDERS (abt 1821-1898) = William WESTON (1822) in 1844. Around 1841, Emma
had an illegitimate daughter Frances SANDERS (history unknown, but
assumed to have died before 1851); o
John SANDERS (1823); A possible
son was also buried 1793 at Holy Trinity (?John). Excluding the possibility
of common names for the time, William & Elleoner's children do have a
naming pattern that may connect them to the earlier generation.

The ROTHERO / PARTRIDGE
Family Connection (solved in
2017 after many years)
In 1901 & 1911 the SANDERS family
of Arthur & Selina had resident William Henry ROTHERO (1884) noted
as a "cousin". He married Millie BURGESS in 1912 Aston.
Through a rather complex ancestry, Selina & William are 2nd
cousins. William is the son of William Henry ROTHERO who married Agnes
PARTRIDGE in 1883. Agnes
died aged 23 giving birth to William. William Henry senior then remarried to
Rose MILTON and had further children. William Henry junior did not appear to
be welcome as part of his father’s new family. The young William Henry was
living with his PARTRIDGE grandparents in 1891. There is an extended ROTHERO
family from both men.
In 1881 Irving Street, Birmingham, a
19-year-old Agnes was living with her parents John & Elizabeth
PARTRIDGE. Through my research from the opposite direction, Elizabeth
turns out to be Elizabeth VENESS (1825)
of Worcester, who (in addition to having an illegitimate son baptised as John
Bacon VENESS in 1848
Worcester, who in turn had an extensive VENESS family
in Birmingham) had married Benjamin
RICHARDSON in 1860 in Worcester, but then almost immediately set up house
with John PARTRIDGE. The PARTRIDGE couple can be found living together in
1871, as married, with their daughter Agnes. It appears that John abandoned
his wife, Sarah nee MEIGH, and
their several children in Worcester abt 1861, to resettle with Elizabeth in
Birmingham. John & Elizabeth finally married in 1880 (with Elizabeth
giving her father’s name as Samuel VENESS.
Although transcription indices have her father incorrectly as RICHARDSON, it
is correct on the original). John’s wife, Sarah, died in 1877 Worcester. It
is not clear when Elizabeth’s legal husband, Benjamin, died, but presumably
John & Elizabeth waited for both spouses to be deceased prior to their
marriage as “widower & widow”.
The
relationship through Selina BICKNELL, whose mother was Elizabeth,
the illegitimate d/o Elizabeth VENESS (by John
SMITH) shows Selina’s and William’s grandmothers were the same person, i.e.
Elizabeth, the daughter of Samuel VENESS & Mary SPALDING of Worcester,
who married in 1817. This is explained in more detail in my Ancestry tree and
on the VENESS webpage.

is indicative only and not necessarily fully correct or complete. The

Brian LOOMES, has:
James
SANDERS, Birmingham - 1880 (vol. 2);
Albert SAUNDERS, Birmingham - 1868-80 (vol. 2);
I have also
noted the ancestry of my maternal aunt's husband's first wife, who was also
SANDERS, since my Paternal SANDERS line is also
connected to the Birmingham gun trade. Both families had clockmaking &
watchmaking businesses in the Aston area of the city. The outline of the
family is as follows:
George
SANDERS (c1773), Gun Barrel Maker
& Jane his wife were married by about 1801. George was in
business around Whittall Street in the period 1827-31, and may be related to Joseph
Alexander SANDERS (c1790), my paternal 3xGGF. Family data is deduced from
the testament of Jane SANDERS. Children:
· Unknown son (c1802; who married
and had a daughter Jane SANDERS (c1820));
· Horatio Nelson
SANDERS
(c1807);
· Unknown daughter (who married BAGSHAW
and had a daughter c1830);
· An unknown child whose grandchild is
Edwin EVERITT (c1847);
· Jane (c1810);
Horatio
Nelson SANDERS
(Gun Stock Varnisher of 29 Whittall Street, Birmingham) = Elizabeth JUDGES

· George SANDERS (c1838);
· Albert SANDERS (1840);
· Edward SANDERS (1842);
· Elizabeth SANDERS (1844);

After the
death of Elizabeth, Horatio married Louisa Mary Ann JUDGE by 1849 and
had further children, with both son’s families in Herries Street, Queen's
Park, London in 1901:
· Horatio SANDERS (1850)

o
Laura SANDERS (1895).
Their son Albert SANDERS (1840,
Master Watch/Clockmaker of Newtown Row from 1869-1901, n. 1840) = Mary Ann
