The
BLATHERWICK Families of Nottinghamshire
The family name
comes from the village of Blatherwycke
situated 5 miles NE of Corby,
Northamptonshire, half way towards Stamford, Lincolnshire,
England. "wic"
is Old English for farm. Blather
has a variety of possible origins - suggestions include from a
persons name (e.g. Balther's Farm), to some distinguishing
feature such as bladder-like plants (from Old English "blaedre").
The latter would be likely if a particularly low lying, marshy
area close to the stream shown on the map below.

|
Distribution
of the family name in 1881 is shown above, which predominates
in the East Midlands (NTT) area close to the village of
origin. This is still reflected in today's data
(2000/2005), shown below.

The
above map shows “BLATHERWICK Land” in summary,
which is the NE quadrant from Nottingham towards Newark. Most
villages that BLATHERWICKs inhabited are shown. Nottingham,
Radford (within Nottingham), Basford (including nearby
Derbyshire villages), Bingham and Southwell are the main
Nottinghamshire town and rural registration districts for
records. Note that Bulcote is a small hamlet adjacent to
Burton Joyce, and Gedling is adjacent to Carlton. Nearby
place names can be interchangeable on census records.
Rolleston cum Fiskerton are two villages just SW of Newark.

The
outline above is indicative only and not necessarily fully
correct or complete. Further lines of descent are recorded and
often found to be interconnected. The Ancestry environment has
been very helpful in tying up trees (meeting people researching
from a different direction) and changes are frequent. Due to
families in the same place with the same names, it can be
impossible (without inside family information) to be sure who the
parents are. Assumptions without detailed cross-verification can
lead to incorrect links. The CreativeGraces family tree (with ca.
300 connected BLATHERWICKs) can be found here on
Ancestry: http://trees.ancestry.co.uk/pt/pedigree.aspx?tid=9072976 This
is where you can find the most up-to-date information. You
will need approval for Guest access.
In the 1851
census for Notts., BLATHERWICK families are concentrated in a few
villages: Gunthorpe, Bulcote, Lowdham & Hoveringham. The
first name William appears to be particularly popular. In the
1844 Trade Directory of Nottinghamshire there are 3 BLATHERWICKs
in Burton Joyce: John BLATHERWICK (a framework knitter),
Joseph BLATHERWICK & William BLATHERWICK (both
joiners).
Family groupings
are derived from microfiche 1.2.1748-8.9.1823 (Burton Joyce
baptisms) & 1851 census returns for Burton & Bulcote. It
should be noted that the Burton Joyce Local History Society have
reportedly been unable to resolve all family relationships due to
too many similar names and family events around the same time. A
good example are the two John BLATHERWICKs who both married Mary
(one to Mary MEE, one to Mary JACKSON), both in 1804 in Gedling.
