The JOANES / JOHNES / JONAS / JONES Family of C17th Elkesley, Nottinghamshire

Distribution of the JOANES family name (above) & the JOHNES family name (below) in 1881

The earliest generations at C17th Elkesley, Nottinghamshire.

Seeking ancestry of Thomas JOHNES and Dorrathy JOHNES (possibly a distant relative) my 7xGGPs who married 21.2.1668. He died 12.1.1704, she died 20.7.1727 (Wills for both).

Possible parents of either could be the only known couple John & Jane JOHNES.

Thomas & Dorrathy had children Anne JOHNES (c. 31.10.1669; d. by 1673), Anne JOHNES (c. 10.4.1673, who later married into the BARTON family), William JOHNES (c. 24.11.1675; bur. 2.2.1679), Dorothy JOHNES (c. 8.4.1683) & Mary JOHNES (who married into the COLSON family).

Daughter Dorothy JOHNES = Elias BRADLEY, (signed register as churchwarden in 1734) on 11.3.1717 at Elkesley. She was buried 7.11.1753 at Elkesley.

Dorothy's Will of 1727:

Mentions 6 grandchildren Elizabeth, Mary, Thomas, Anne, Francis & John BARTON (some aged 21+), children of Francis BARTON son-in-law, also William & Mary COLSEN (minors) children of William COLSEN, also Thomas & Mary BRADLEY children of Elias BRADLEY the Younger. All bequeathed £12 each. The above-mentioned Elizabeth BARTON gets the bed and all the furniture. Linen equally divided between her daughter Dorothy's daughters Anne BARTON, Dorothy BRADLEY & Mary COLSEN.
