The QUINNEY Family of C17th/C18th Bidford-on-Avon, Warwickshire

Distribution of the family name in 1881
showing a South Midlands focus.

Although there is a recognised Gaelic origin for the family name in the Isle of Man, the Midlands name may have a separate and unrelated origin, if it wasn't an early immigrant family from the IOM or Ireland. The nearby villages of Quinton may be the origin. Since they were mentioned in the 1086 Domesday Book, it is likely "Quinn's or Quinney's Farm" may be the local origin of the name. A road in the centre of Bidford, near St. Joseph's church, is Quinney's Lane and may be related to the local family who may have been landowners in an earlier period. Like other Bidford families, there were likely later migrations to rapidly expanding Birmingham.

Head of the tree believed to be Josephi (Joseph) QUINNEY and his unknown wife. Children include:

  • Johannes (John/Jonathan) QUINNEY (c. 6.3.1680);

  • Guilielmus (William) QUINNEY (c. 15.8.1686);

  • Sarah QUINNEY married Joseph WILKES  in 10.9.1703 Bidford (my 7xGGPs).
