The
SEYWELL Family of C16th Plumtree, Nottinghamshire
The family name
potentially comes from a variety of sources, most commonly - sea
wall. This provides a number of variants that can include:
Seawal, Seawald, Seawall, Seawel, Seawell, Seewal, Seewald,
Seewall, Seewel, Seewell, Seiwal, Seiwall, Seiwel, Seiwell,
Sewal, Sewall, Sewel, Seywal, Seywall, Seywel, Seywell, and most
commonly Sewell. Being so far from the sea, a more local
derivation is possible. Another origin is from "seven
wells", an ancient custom of "luck 7" with wells,
often used for offerings to the gods. As examples, nearby
Northamptonshire has a number of places including: Sywell,
Seawell (Blakesley) also called Seven Springs, Seven Wells at
Apethorpe, Barnwell & Sulgrave. Both Seawell at Blakesley and
Sywell were recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086.
Richard BALDOCK
