The WHITAKER Family of C16th-C20th Worcestershire


The name has a local Midlands (Warwickshire) origin from "white field" and can be found as early as 1180 in Warwickshire with a Simon de Wit Acra. The village of Whitacre can be found north of Coventry.

Head of family is Nicholas WHITAKER (c1591, Halesowen, WOR, d. 1669) & his wife Martha of unknown family, (c1595, Halesowen) who married by 1623, my 10xGGPs. A short summary of descent is shown below as the detail of the many branches are too numerous to show here. Please refer to Ancestry.com. Note: A minority of researchers have his wife as Elizabeth. Their children include:

·       John WHITAKER (9.11.1623, Halesowen, d. 25.8.1692) & his wife Elizabeth of unknown family (1627-1691), who married by 1644, my 9xGGPs. Their children include:

o   William WHITAKER (c. 20.8.1644, Belbroughton, WOR d. 1.1.1666);

o   Mary WHITAKER (n. 1647, c. 2.7.1647 Belbroughton)

o   John WHITAKER (7.6.1651, Belbroughton, d. 5.8.1728) & wife Ann WHITE, my 8xGGPs., who married 5.10.1678 Broome, WOR. Their children include:

§  John WHITAKER aka John Junior WHITAKER (n. 25.3.1684, Belbroughton, d. 11.9.1765) & his wife Mary HILL, my 7xGGPs, who married at Worcester Cathedral on 25.2.1717. Their children include:

§  Benjamin WHITAKER (c. 23.4.1718 Stone, d. 14.2.1756) = Catherine (c1720 of Stone, WOR);

§  John WHITAKER (c1748) = Sarah PRATT (c1754). Note: A minority of researchers have this John as the son of Benjamin (1698) & Mary, below, which can confuse online records;

§  Sarah WHITAKER (c1773) = John TAYLOR in 1799 at King's Norton, WOR;

§  William WHITAKER (c1781, Churchill) = Elizabeth MOTHER;

§  Ann WHITAKER (n. 29.4.1720 & c. 8.5.1720, Stone);
