The
BICKNELL Family
Mid-Late
C18th Budbrooke, Warwickshire (with some early C19th residence in
the Hull area of East Riding, Yorkshire (as BRICKNALL):
1806-1817) before returning to Hatton, Warwickshire by 1817, then
Mid C19th/C21st Aston & Greater Birmingham
Surname
Background
Spelling variants
can include: BICKNALL,
BACKNALL, BACKNELL, BACKNULL, BECHNEL, BECKNELL, BEUCKNELL,
BICKENELL, BICKNAL, BICKNALL, BICKNEL, BICKNELD, BICKNELL,
BICKNELS, (BICKNET), (BICKNETT), BICKNIL, BICKNILL, BICKNOL,
BICKNOLD, BICKNOLL, BIGNELL, BIGNOLD, BRICKNALL, BUCKNALL,
BYCKENELL
Reaney's "The
Origin of English Surnames" discusses these name variants.
Four modern surnames appear to be derived from Bagnall in
Staffordshire (BAGENAL, BAGNALL, BAGNELL, BAGNOLD) and
were alternative names in the Calendar of Patent Rolls (1561).
The surname has origins from holt, meaning "wood",
such as in William de BAGENHOLT (Assize Roll, Staffordshire;
1299) whereas the BICKNELL variants are more associated with
-hill and -hall. Currently, the BICKNELL surname is believed to
be derived from the following three places:
Thomas
de BIKENHULL in the Curia Regis Rolls of Warwickshire (1214).
Later found as BIGENHULL in 1354 and was pronounced "Bignell".
BICKENHILL, Warwickshire: This
is the likely origins of my particular family name (right hand
map, below).
William
de BIGENHULL in the Rotuli Hundredorum of Oxfordshire (1279).
This is likely to been associated with Bignell House (Bicester,
Oxon) which occurs as Bigenhull (1220), Bickenhulle (1285) and
Bygenhall (c1377). The surname is also found as de BIGEHILLE
(1247).
Bickenhall in Somerset:
Bichehalle (1086) & Bikehilla (1186) leading to the surname
of John de BIKENHILL in the Subsidy Rolls of Somerset (1327).

The surname
variants are quite widely distributed in later centuries, however
for my Birmingham family, the majority spelling is BICKNELL,
close to Bickenhill, near Birmingham (shown on the map.
above). Such names may be independently derived from many
Beacon Hills that formed part of an ancient British
communications network, with four main focal areas as shown on
the maps, below. Accordingly, the use of the same name in one
areas will be related to a common place of origin than actually
blood family connections or descent from a noble family. The
family during their stay in Yorkshire were recorded as BRICKNALL
or BRICKNELL and were resident for a time in the west part
of Hull, near Sculcoates, that has a modern day council ward
called Bricknell.

Distribution of the BICKNALL
(left) and BICKNELL
(right)
family names in 1881, noting that there is little evidence
of a significant Yorkshire cluster with this spelling. The
BICKNELL variant has a clear focus in Warwickshire,
supporting the available data for my family. The map below
shows present day distribution based on 2000-2005 data,
maintaining the Warwickshire focus. The name frequency in the
UK is about 51 per million.

corrections and new links will be reported back to help future
research.
The current heads
of the family tree have been identified as John
BRICKNALL or
BICKNELL
& Mary
DUNING /
DUNNING,
my 5xGGPs, who were married in 1767, Budbrooke, Warwickshire.
Shortly thereafter, my 4xGGF Daniel was born in 1768 at
Budbrooke.
Daniel
BRICKNALL / BICKNELL (I) (my 4xGGF):
As
a Cordwainer, Daniel
BRICKNALL (1768)
may have been a journeyman to his trade since despite his
Warwickshire roots he married Thirza
or Theresa
COUPLAND or
COPELAND
in Sculcoates, Yorkshire in 1806.
Sculcoates is now a part of western Kingston Upon Hull (aka Hull
city). His wife was given as Thirza according to marriage record
& son John
Isaac BRICKNELL's
baptism (in 1807 Sunderland, Durham), as Thasa at daughter
Elizabeth
BRICKNALL's
baptism in 1810 at Foston-on-the-Wolds, just north of Hull, and
as Theresa at son Daniel
BRICKNALL's
baptism in 1816 also at Foston. No other children known or found.
The family appear
to have moved back to Warwickshire (Hatton) shortly after son
Daniel BICKNELL was born in 1816 since he was also christened
there a second time a year later. No-one of this family name is
in Foston parish in the 1823 Directory. Surviving children would
be in Warwickshire. An Ann BICKNELL baptised at 1819
Budbrooke, Warks may be a further child. Thirza BICKNELL
was confirmed as 67 y.o. widow living in Hatton Green in 1841
census. Daniel, her husband was buried in Hatton in 1833. Theresa
BICKNELL died there in 1856 (Warwick Reg. District).
